How to start potty training

Try your best to make the potty training experience as comfortable and rewarding for your child. Start by having your child feel comfortable around the potty training seat. Encourage him/her to sit on first thing in the morning, right before he/she goes to sleep and throughout the day.

Introduce your child to the toilet. The best way is to show how it works. Take a soiled diaper and show your child that the poop goes in the toilet. Encourage him/her to flush.
Here are some potty training tips for after your child understands the how the toilet works and is comfortable with the potty training seat.

Help your child understand when it's time to use the potty training seat. The best way to do this is to rush him/her to the potty training seat when you think your child is trying to relieve themselves. Another method used is to give your child a lot of fluids to drink if he/she is having difficulty remembering to use the potty training chair. Ask him/her if they have a need to use the potty on a regular basis. The moment they express the urge to relieve him/her or notice that they have an urge on their face. Rush him/her to the potty.

Children usually have an urge to relieve themselves first thing in the morning and 1-2 hours after each meal. Encourage your child to sit on the potty training seat for a short amount of time during those time-frames. Also, ask your child every 3 hours if they need to use the potty training seat. This reminds them that they should release their excrements into a bowl, and not their diaper.

Bring your child to the potty training chair every time they have an accident. Gently remind him/her that pee and poop belong in the potty training seat. Have them sit on the toilet briefly. This will help them remember to use the potty training seat next time they have an urge to relieve themselves.
